The Clinic

You will be seen by professional staff experienced in dealing with people who are worried about deeply personal problems. Please be rest assured that the information you give will be dealt with in a sympathetic, helpful and confidential manner.

Registration

When you report to reception on your first visit, you will be asked to complete a registration form asking for your personal details (name, address etc.) This information is treated as highly confidential.
You will be given a clinic number on an appointment card. You should bring this card with you on subsequent visits to the department. If you contact the clinic by telephone, after your first visit, it would be helpful to quote your clinic number.
Your medical notes and personal information remain in the clinic and their contents will NOT be divulged to anyone outside the clinic without your permission. Your GP or other healthcare providers are not informed of your visit except when you attended following a written-referral.

Waiting Area

After registration you will be asked to wait in the patient area. There are separate male and female waiting areas, but arrangements can be made for couples to sit together in the male waiting area.
We do our best to keep you waiting as short as possible although sometimes delays are inevitable. You should expect your first visit to last around 1 hour.

Consultation with the Doctor

Consultation is usually alone with the Doctor. A blood test for syphilis and Hepatitis B are routinely offered to all new patients. This blood sample will also be tested for HIV antibody with your verbal consent. If you do not require this test please inform the Doctor. Whilst we will try to accede your request, same gender consultation cannot always be guaranteed. Please do inform the receptionist of any gender preference at the time of registration.

Results of tests and treatment

Some tests are done in the clinic and results are usually ready after about 20 minutes. Any medication required after these results are available will be given to you before you leave the clinic. This treatment is free of charge. Most of the routine test results are available after two weeks. Results are not provided in writing. There is an administrative charge for such requests payable to the Bure Clinic Endowment Fund. The fees are variable and are  based on the complexity of the report and time involved. All routine procedures are free of any charges.

Male patients

Males are asked not to pass urine two to three hours prior to their appointment.

Follow up

If the doctor wishes to see you again you will be asked to make an appointment at the reception at a mutually convenient time but usually two weeks after the initial consultation. At the follow up visit you will be given any outstanding results. We would like to emphasize the importance of keeping your follow up appointment when made. Sometimes the symptoms disappear but you may still carry the infection.

Health Advisor

Before you leave the department you may be asked to see the Health Advisor. He/She will attempt to answer any queries you may have relating to your condition and how to prevent a recurrence. He/She can also discuss and advise you about informing sexual partners, so they can get treatment, (if required). If you are not asked to see the Health Advisor, but wish to do so, please inform the receptionist.
